Whenever I hear the word death, it creates a sense of darkness, fear and grief. Losing someone close causes pain. The loss of a loved one is indeed a stressful and life-altering experience. But the truth is sooner or later we all have to die. With the capacity, humans can conquer almost every obstacle- except death. Physical death is inevitable so someday confronting our end is a must. Perhaps one of the hardest things to face is a loss, a loss due to death. I have seen people died in front of me so I used to consider death as an enemy, the strongest enemy that human can’t ever win against. For me, death was always awful which would only bring sorrow.
And growing up in a Christian family, I’ve known all my life that Jesus died for my sins. Now the question is: Is death always a loss? More importantly, Was Christ’s death a loss for anyone? Is there anything humankind earned from someone’s death?
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”. (NKJV) – that would certainly be the greatest gift that anyone of us could ever receive.
Physical death is inevitable but spiritual death is a choice.
Christ’s death on the cross paid as retribution for every sin of human. Without Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins, no one would have eternal life. By shedding the blood on the cross, not only Jesus took the punishment that we deserved but offered up his Righteousness 2 Corinthians 5:21. He died on the cross as our substitute (substitutionary atonement). Obviously, the suffering Jesus went through is devoid of expectation. He was mocked, beaten, tortured and finally killed- an unfair lynching of an innocent man. From the human’s perspective, this might sound foolish. But the result of His death is good.
“For the [a]message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God“, 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NKJV).
- Christ’s death removed our sin and guilt. Hebrews 9:26
- Christ’s death removed the wrath of God that we justly deserved. Romans 3:25-26
- Christ’s death removed alienation and reconciled us to God. Romans 5:10
- Christ’s death redeemed us from the curse of the law. Galatians 3:13-14
God did not require the death of Jesus — but we did.
Personally, for me, Christ’s death means that I no longer have to live in fear and death. It is a freedom and forgiveness of my sins. It means that Jesus did not want me to have an eternal death but eternal life with Him. His sacrifice means He loves me and He will always do the right thing for me. He gave his life so I could have mine. And most importantly Christ’s death showed me the Love of God for me despite the thorns in Christ’s head, the nails in his hands and feet, the spear in his side, which were the result of my sins.
