Thirst for God

Thirst for God

It scares me how on a single day people can be so in deep love with God, how they can be so full of fire for God. The inner desire to worship God resides in you. You strongly want to dwell in the fellowship or any other Godly activities. That moment you think and remember that He is all you need for the rest of your life. You understand that everything besides God is vain in your life. Everything is a waste. You see how wicked you were, how impure your thoughts were, how carelessly you were living your life, how stubborn you were. You realize you have gone against God much time, you have hurt God, yourself and others too. You feel so worthless and wretched. Now you crave for God. So to make things right you spend countless hours on your knees. You proclaim his grace upon your life. You see your sin and confess it. You ask for forgiveness. You cry.
But the very next day, you do not even think about God. The feelings you had for God like the previous day fades away. You skip reading the Bible, you stop worshipping, you stop proclaiming his grace. You do not kneel down before him, not even once. You don’t feel his presence. You avoid every fellowship. You start to dwell in worldly things. You prioritize world over God. You treasure worlds beauty. You pursue flesh instead of spirit.

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.  My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? Psalm 42:1-2 (KJV)

Have you ever been truly thirsty? How much do you think about water when you are thirsty? The thirstier you feel, the more you demand water. Even some may visualize fountain, river, lake or any other connotative of water. The greater the thirst, the earnest is the search. In scripture, the concept of thirst is used as both physical and spiritual.

In Psalm 42 A powerful image of a deer is seen suffering from thirst. Maybe the thirst was due to drought or from heat or by been chased by hunters. Either way, the deer longed for and craved water. In the same way, our soul must long for and need God. Like the deer, His people must long for fellowship with God as only this can quench the thirst of the soul.

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is. Psalm 63:1 (KJV)

Why do you experience as being thirsty?
Because you experience lack of God.

Let’s see an example: David’s soul lost its desperate thirst for God when he was at the peak of success, wealth. And what happened? King David and the beautiful Bathsheba’s adulterous love risked David his throne, country and even the wrath of God.

Always remember that man was created for God. At the core of our being is a vacuum – a deep sense of emptiness that only God can replenish.

1 Peter 2:2-3 says, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby. If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”

What a wonderful God we serve, who loved us first and who sent His son to die for us while we were yet sinners. He is looking and longing for those who will seek Him. When we, by faith, genuinely and diligently seek after God, we will find Him.

After a mundane work from home in this pandemic period, I was longing for the scripture and here I found one with your insight. Amazingly written with a simple yet effective approach.

However, I have a suggestion; it would have been easier for us (at least for me) if you have used NKJV or other. I find it a bit hard to understand KJV)…

Thank you Sarah… Much love, prayer and blessings to you bahini….
