Christianity vs Astrology and Zodiac Sign

Astrology is the ancient belief that the patterns of stars and planets have an influence on human life in the world, e.g. determining one’s destiny directly at the time of birth. It claims to foretell aspects of your life based on sign names according to when you were born. A horoscope then attempts to interpret this destiny. Both serve the purpose to gain insight into a person’s character and foretell the future.

Since the 20th century, the practice and use of astrology have grown even among Christians. I hear people ask what sign they are with the intent of finding out what type of person they are (it’s called natal astrology), their abilities, manner of self-expression, or if a couple is compatible or not. Trying to figure out what God wants for your life is good, and even a great way to be closer to Him, however, doing so by using astrology or horoscope and zodiac signs isn’t a reasonable way. Prayer is more accurate and inspiring than any other thing.

Looking at the Old Testament, the royal astrologers of the Babylonian court were put to shame by God’s prophet, Daniel. He was ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers (Daniel 1:20). He was able to interpret the King’s dream after the astrologers had failed (Daniel 2:27). Only God can reveal the future; all else are merely predictions made through inference, statistical knowledge, or just grasping at straws.

Occult practices as a form of divination are extremely forbidden in Scripture (Deuteronomy 18:10-14). “Divining” is attempting to predict the future through occult practices. God forbade the children of Israel to worship or serve the “Host of Heavens” (Deuteronomy 4:19, 2 Kings 17:16-18). The New Testament Christians turned from sorcery (Acts 19:18-20). There are many other verses like Jeremiah 10:2, Ezekiel 12:24 & 21:21, and Jeremiah 27:9-10 & 14:14 where God forbids His people to hold their belief in astrology.

By believing in astrology, a person puts hope and worship into the stars instead of God. Leviticus 19:26 clearly tells us not to practice divination or sorcery. So it is essential to draw a line in the sand when it comes to astrology. Astrology and Christianity are not compatible with each other. Any Christian or church that allows or encourages astrological teachings is in defiance of the Scriptures and of God’s commandments.
